Anugerah Hijau Green Fashion 2014

Anugerah Hijau, or the Green Awards, is an annual nationwide competition organized by non-profit environmental organization,EcoKnights and its collaborative partners and sponsors. The competition aims to challenge young adults to be creative and innovative in addressing everyday environmental issues such as pollution, limited space, improper disposal of waste, forest destruction, and human health, to name a few.

The competition in 2014 has three categories:

 Green Space - designing an eco-friendly campus for Academy of Sustainability.
 Green Film - environmental short film making on Energy.

 Green Fashion - sustainable fashion design and construction using bamboo fibre material.

About EcoKnights

EcoKnights is a not-for-profit environmental organization with the Malaysian Registrar of Societies. Founded in 2005 by Yasmin Rasyid, the organization focuses on community based environmental education and awareness projects that help Malaysians to understand and deal with environmental issues that affect them. EcoKnights offers a variety of programs for the community including the Sentinels of Time photography competition, Knights of Nature Sustainability Camp, Anugerah Hijau youth competition, and the Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival (KLEFF), which is now in its 7th year. EcoKnights also provides community film screenings, organizes environmental talks and workshops, and provides consultation and programming for environmental corporate social responsibility efforts.

Inspiration of design

Our inspiration for the design is architecture building from “Sultan Abdul Samad Building” for Green Fashion Competition with the theme “wearable”. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building has been a landmark for Kuala Lumpur .we were intrigued with the architecture heritage design from “Sultan Abdul Samad Building “. The reasons why we choose the building are because we want create some new fresh design from historical or old design to be futuristic design.

Detail/ description

Garment: Menswear

Materials for Garment: Bamboo fabric & Batik sarong

Batik sarong: The old batik sarongs that are kept by my mum that is torn or unused. We        

Construct and manipulate certain parts of the batik sarong to be on our design.

Accessories: Messenger beg

Materials for Accessories: Batik sarong and egg box

Egg box: From my house and small shop (the one they throw away). We hammer and sew them

    together to become the beg.

Location of where the recyclable / discarded

The materials that we used in our design were found in Seri Mas Ayu (one of our team

member) home. Batik sarong are old clothes that are not wearable because there

are torn everywhere and egg box we get from shop near with her house.

- The curves on the design are inspired by the curve of the gate in Sultan Abdul Samad Building.

- The lines in the inner shirt are inspired by the lines form by the brick of the building.

- The gray color parts are where the batik sarong supposed to be.

- We will be using natural dye extract by ourselves from vegetables and fruits.

- The inner shirt is dyed using tie dye technique.

Messenger Beg (Accessory)

-          The grey color parts are made out of the batik sarong.

-          The cream colors are made out of the nest egg.

T-shirt Design

-          We use the Malaysia map to represent that Ecoknights started and originated from Malaysia.

-          The trees and others vector represent the sustainable living culture that Ecokinghts trying to grow in Malaysia.

After workshop they give around 3 month period to finish the product.
